Frequently asked questions

The short version of everything sellers ask about fees, margins and exports.

How do marketplace fees work?

Every marketplace charges a percentage of the sale plus fixed per-order fees. The percentages stack, and that's what surprises people:

  • Etsy: $0.20 listing fee per item, 6.5% transaction fee, plus payment processing ~3% + $0.25. If you charge shipping, Etsy also takes 6.5% of the shipping amount.
  • Amazon: referral fee of ~15% of the total sale price (category-dependent — media can be lower, jewelry higher), plus $0.99 per-item fee on individual seller plans. FBA adds fulfilment fees on top.
  • eBay: final value fee of ~13.25% on the total amount of the sale (item + shipping), plus $0.30 fixed fee per order.

The effective cost is roughly price × (all % fees) + flat fees. On a $25 Etsy sale that's about $3.63 in fees — nearly 15% before you count product cost. This calculator stacks your fee fields the same way, so the numbers match your statement.

What margin should I target?

Margin is profit ÷ price — it tells you how much of each dollar you keep. Common benchmarks for handmade / resell goods:

  • Under 10% — danger zone. One fee change, return or ad campaign wipes you out.
  • 15–25% — healthy for competitive, price-sensitive categories.
  • 30–50% — where you want handmade, personalised or branded products. You need room for ads (often 10–15% of revenue), returns (2–5%) and your own time.

A practical rule: price for at least 30% after fees, then treat anything above as your advertising budget. Use the reverse-pricing box: type your target margin and it tells you the price — then check whether the market actually accepts that price before committing.

How do I export my data from Etsy / Amazon Seller Central?

Etsy: Go to Shop Manager → Settings → Options → Download data (or Shop Manager → Billing for fee CSVs). Choose CSV, pick a month. For listings, use Listings → CSV export tools or the sold-order CSV, which contains price, shipping and per-order costs you can map to this tool's sku, cost, price, shipping columns.

Amazon Seller Central: Reports → Fulfilment → All Orders (or Payments → Statement view → Generate report). Set a date range, request a flat-file CSV, download from Report status. The order report gives you item-price and shipping-price columns; your buy cost comes from your supplier list or Inventory → Add/Remove products → Cost.

Both exports need light cleanup: open in any spreadsheet, keep SKU, cost, price, shipping, save as CSV, then upload here. A header row sku, cost, price, shipping is detected automatically — but the tool also works with header-less four-column files.
